If Someone You Love Has A Problem

If someone you know appears to have a problem with alcohol or other drugs there are several things you can do to help. Some signs of problem drinking could be a change in behavior when they are using or the avoidance of social situations where alcohol or other drugs are not available. Another indication could be if you feel afraid of or embarrassed to be around the person when they are using.

If you notice these behaviors or others that indicate your loved one has a problem, be honest with him or her and express your concerns.  These times are actually windows of opportunity that may offer a moment of discovery for the drinker or addict to see the nature of the addiction as a disease that affects the body, mind and spirit of the individual and the entire family. Never cover for the alcoholic or take on any of the alcoholic’s responsibilities. Your friend or loved one will probably reject your advice and become defensive. The person will usually deny that a problem exists and will question your loyalty. Don’t be discouraged. It is not the real person talking but the addicted individual whose life is out of control due to the disease of addiction.
